Abby Simpson

Good Food Fellow

Abby Simpson serves as the Good Food Fellow with Michigan Sustainable Business Forum (MiSBF), a position supported by the MI Healthy Climate Corps. In this role, she works to advance the Michigan Food System Waste Reduction Roadmap by conducting research, providing technical assistance, and facilitating interventions for stakeholders and community members throughout her term of service.

As a climate champion, Abby Simpson has built a diverse professional profile, including partnering with the Sierra Club to craft environmental research articles to educate community members on critical sustainability issues and efforts. At the Michigan League of Conservation Voters, she advanced community outreach, advocacy, and education efforts centered around voting rights, voter engagement initiatives, Proposal 2 advocacy, and the Inflation Reduction Act. Additionally, Simpson served as an election specialist for Kalamazoo County Government, where she was in charge of implementing nine days of early voting for every state and federal election – the first time in the State’s history.

Simpson’s educational experience reflects her passion for sustainability and political action. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Western Michigan University (WMU), double majoring in Environmental Sustainability & Studies and Political Science. During her college career, she advanced on-campus sustainability initiatives by supporting composting efforts from dining center food waste and enhancing the University’s climate action plan and carbon footprint reduction actions through targeted food waste reduction strategies. Her reflective piece about Michigan’s environmental history and Asylum Lake Nature Preserve, “Nature: The Natural Antidote,” was featured in The Laureate, Western Michigan University’s literary journal. She also received the AMPLIFY Environmental Policy Scholarship for her research article proposing green business solutions to combat the climate crisis.

A Southwest Michigan native, Simpson enjoys visiting local businesses and eateries, strolling scenic paths at nature preserves, gardening in the summertime, and trying out health and wellness facilities in the area.
