West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum will host a luncheon examining national and global scale resilience and climate adaptation and other topics on Monday, November 14 at Amway Corporate Headquarters from 12 to 2 pm.
Natural disasters are occurring with increasing frequency across the world with an average of 20 events occurring per week in 2015, a significant increase over the last 30 years. Over the past decade 700,000 lives and $1.3 trillion have been lost due to impacts potentially associated with climate change.
Featured speaker Dale Sands, Senior Vice President and Director of Metro Strategy and Resiliency for AECOM, will provide an introduction to resilience and climate adaptation, discuss actions the public and private sector are taking to evaluate their vulnerability, and introduce his recent work developing a framework for disaster risk reduction on behalf of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, which was recently used to assess the preparedness of 208 businesses located within New Orleans historic commercial corridors.
Sands is currently working with a 140-member private sector advisory group to create risk-resilient societies in collaboration with the public sector in a transparent and inclusive way that delivers local and measurable impact, including Walmart, which has been a driving force in the private sector.
The first of a two-month focus on climate resiliency, with local impacts and responses to be highlighted at the December meeting.
Also on the agenda: Representatives from Amway will discuss Envisioning Ada, a resident-guided community vision for the future of the Ada Village designed to enhance its natural and cultural assets for walkability, livability and sustainability. Amway has been a key contributor to the development of Envisioning Ada, from stakeholder considerations, land acquisition and various design elements.
This month’s meeting sponsored by Amway.
