An accomplished environmental educator, Daniel Schoonmaker was named Executive Director of West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum in 2013, a new role created to position the organization for growth and innovation. Since then, the forum has achieved record growth in participation while launching new strategic initiatives focused on waste diversion, sustainable food systems, climate resiliency, social responsibility and pollution prevention. He has been recognized by Grand Rapids Business Journal as one of its 2016 Forty Business Leaders Under 40 and as a 2017 Newsmaker of the Year finalist, by the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of Grand Rapids as a finalist for its Exemplary Executive Award, and as a 2017 Sustainability Champion by the Office of Sustainability Practices at Grand Valley State University.
Previously, Schoonmaker served as Director of Member Services for West Michigan Environmental Action Council, where he managed communications, volunteers, events and the redevelopment of the organization’s flagship water stewardship programs. Prior to that he held various communications and journalism positions, including public relations manager for a science and technology marketing firm, a staff writer for Grand Rapids Business Journal and managing editor for Rapid Growth Media.
He is a graduate of Aquinas College and Grand Rapids Community College. Among other distinctions, he is a LEED Accredited Professional with the U.S. Green Building Council and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
