The team at Nichols began their journey more than ten years ago when they noticed that the green cleaning movement within their industry seemed to be gaining momentum.  They knew they had to formalize a program and engaged in a relationship with The Ashkin Group to help them through that process. Their approach to green cleaning with their customers was to have a holistic approach and they wanted to help them with more than just green products – anyone could do that.  With more than 550 manufacturers in the industry producing products that meet 3rd party green certification, green cleaning products are plentiful.

Nichols had been exposed to sustainability concepts through its involvement in the West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum for the past 20 years.  In order to build its credibility however, it needed to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability. They achieved LEED EBOM certification on their corporate headquarters and distribution center in 2010 originally and recertified under LEED O+M Version 4.0 in 2015 and is preparing to recertify again under LEED O+M version 4.1 by the end of 2019. They also participate in Michigan Battle of the Buildings and have been recognized as winners twice and continue to make strikes to reduce their energy usage.  Recycling vs landfill remain near 90% diversion. Nichols was part of a industry pilot program through ISSA called DEAL (Distributor Efficiency Analytics and Learning) and contribute data in the areas of energy, waste and recycling, water, and transportation. Data goes in to the Sustainability Dashboard which makes it a visible tool to help engagement associates and others in the industry. The program has helped raise the bar for the entire commercial cleaning industry.

Nichols is proud to represent many of the manufacturers in its industry that are leading the way with sustainable products to purchase.  It relies on its suppliers to continue to research new reliable technologies, engage in sustainable practices within their organization, provide environmental impact information at the product level, provide training tools and support for its clients by being part of the team.

In the Enterprise System and their web-based eBusiness Center, the green products that they stock are identified by two levels:
1) 3rd party certified green products and
2) green products that are not 3rd party certified however support a green cleaning program (ie: microfiber cloths).

Nichols is here to help their customers achieve their sustainability goals.
