West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum’s October monthly meeting is a luncheon program on cause marketing and social purpose at Amway Corporate Headquarters. Featured speakers include Samuel Shiroff, Vice President Business + Social Responsibility for global consulting firm Edelman, and Debra Kalmbach, Manager of Global Corporate Citizenship at Amway. This month’s meeting is presented by Amway.
For more than two decades, Edelman has been at the vanguard of helping leading brands and corporations create lasting connections between business and society. Campaigns such as StarKist’s dolphin-safe tuna, Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty Starbucks’ Shared Planet and GE’s ecomagination have helped to communicate and demonstrate alignment with shareholder expectations and the values of stakeholders for mutual benefit. Business + Social Purpose addresses the purpose, CSR, sustainability and citizenship needs of corporations, brands and NGOs.
Sam Shiroff is a Vice President Edelman’s Chicago Business + Social Purpose Practice where his current clients include SC Johnson, Humana, Janssen Pharmaceutical and Quaker. He combines 15 years of international corporate CSR and sustainability experience with a deep knowledge of carbon finance and the non-profit world to provide clients with well-rounded advice from a global perspective.
Prior to joining Edelman in July 2013, Sam was the Senior Sustainability Strategist at the BSH Home Appliance Corporation (BSH), the North American subsidiary of Bosch and Siemens Home Appliances Group–located in Munich, Germany. His responsibilities included developing and implementing the sustainability strategy of the company. Prior to this role, Sam was with BSH in Munich and responsible for the global CSR projects for BSH in developing countries, for establishing and implementing the business models based on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol and promoting appropriate household energy efficiency policies globally. He has also worked in the Deutsche Bank CSR department, where he managed the bank’s investment in the Prototype Carbon Fund of the World Bank and established the $30 million Deutsche Bank Africa Foundation.
In 2003, he became executive director of the Bellagio Forum for Sustainable Development (BFSD) – an international network of corporate and private foundations, multilateral and media organizations striving to attain environmental balance, economic stability and social progress throughout the world. Sam has several publications on the subjects of sustainable development, carbon trading and responsible investment practices for foundations.
Debra Kalmbach manages the Amway One by One Campaign for Children®, which mobilizes Amway country affiliates, employees and distributors in communities around the world to engage in causes that support children in need. What started as a corporate initiative has turned into a grassroots movement, with unique action taking place by Amway people in big and small ways. The 10-year-old initiative has impacted 10 million children.
From national fundraisers to help children with special needs in the United States, to government partnerships to address malnutrition and education in China, to volunteers working side families in Guatemala to build homes, Amway One by One is a mosaic of activities that reflect our company’s vision of helping people live better lives.
The meeting will also feature a short presentation from the WMSBF Tools & Resources Committee on the completion of its P2 grant.
